Hungary, Nature’s Treasure-box
Bükk National Park
The inner areas of the Bükk Mountains were declared a national park in 1977.
Located in the Northern Hungarian Mountain Range this is one of the first nation-
al parks in Hungary, and along with its lively, rich flora it contains a wide range of
geological and speleological resources; approximately 850 caves can be found
here alongside the swallets and the huge, protruding cliffs. Probably the “lake
cave” of Miskolctapolca and the Anna talc-tuff cave of Lillafüred are the most
renowned, but we should not forget about the King Saint Stephen Dripstone
Cave (Szent István Cseppkőbarlang) either, which is excellent for therapeutic
purposes. Those, who prefer the surface, can choose from many wonderful
hiking routes. Sightseeing mini-trains wheeling under nature trails and foliages
provide an opportunity to get a closer look on natural values.

Ipoly Forest
The forest stretching on 64.000 hec-
tares from Börzsöny to as far as Cserhát
is managed by Ipoly Erdő Limited Com-
pany. Due to their devoted work visitors
can get acquainted with the indigenous
animal and plant species via several na-
ture trails and forest schools. The trails
provide insight in the many, colourful fac-
es of the forest, while the informational
signs around provide visitors with useful
knowledge about natural resources and
facts. Ipoly forest is a perfect choice if we feel like only going for a walk or an ex-
cursion, as the guest houses around make several days long trips also possible.

Rám Gorge, Dömös
One of the most beautiful areas in the
Visegrád Mountains, Rám Gorge lies at
the administrative border of Dömös, a
settlement in the famous Dunakanyar
region. Following the popular tourist
pathway along the steep, waterfall-
scattered bed of the Rám Creek we will
see the most spectacular geological
spectacles. The trail was modernised
in 2013, and not only new rest landings
were created, but new ladders and
rails were set up, too, thus the gorge
can be much more safely discovered
by those preferring smaller challenges.
During the hike we can meet rich wildlife; sakers are frequent here, but it is
also a favourite habitat for martens and wildcats.

Salt Hill (Sóhegy), Egerszalók
Situated only 5 kilometres from Eger, in
the valley of the Laskó Creek, Egerszalók
is renowned for its spa, which’s water
springs from 410 meters deep, and its
temperature is about 65-68 Celsius. The
thermal spring among others contains
calcium, sodium and sulphur formed a
limestone sediment, which now spreads
over 120 square meters on the hillside.
Salt deposits were precipitated out with
the cooling of the water, and eventually
this process created the huge salt hill.
This natural phenomenon is extremely
rare, and apart from Egerszalók it can
only be seen at two places in the world,
in Turkey, and in the Yellowstone Park,
in the USA.
