Pannon Wine Region
Szekszárd Wine Region
Grape cultivation started in the Szekszárd
region – the town’s ancient Roman name
is Alisca – by the order of Marcus Aurelius
Roman emperor in the 3rd century, AD.
Following the fall of theRomanEmpire the
Avars and the settling Hungarians kept
to the habit, moreover the Benedictine
abbotship, founded by King Béla I
markedly flourished it. What remained
after the big phylloxera epidemic in the
18th century was threatened by the
later building constructions. Before the
Second World War weekend cottages,
and during the Socialist era warrens
were built on several plantations, thus
today many cellars are located in the
downtown of Szekszárd. Fourteen other settlements belong to the wine region, and
today vine cultivation occurs on approximately 2600 hectares. Mainly red wine is
produced here, a famous variety is the Szekszárdi Bikavér (Red Bull of Szekszárd).

Villány Wine Region
Our southernmost wine region’s historical
past isnot different fromtheother regions’
heritage; differences only appeared in the
18th century with the settlement of the
Swabians. They brought Portugieser with
them, which became and still is the main
variety of the region. In Villány red wine is
produced with modern technology, while
in Siklós white wine enjoys preference.
The Sub-Mediterranean climate favours
to both wines, this is why high quality
products are made here.

Tokaj Wine Region
Tokaj Wine Region
It is quite sure that there was grape-cul-
tivation in the area even before the ar-
rivals of the first Hungarians. Neverthe-
less the region became truly famous in
the 16th and 17th century. Merchants
coming from faraway lands demanded
for Tokaj wine everywhere in the Heg-
yalja territory. This has been the world’s
first closed wine region since 1737,
and under the name of “Tokaj-Hegyalja
Wine Region Historic Cultural Land-
scape” it got inscribed on UNESCO’s
World Heritage List in 2002. The world-
famous Tokaji aszú is produced here. This special wine is made from over-ripen
and high sugar levelled muscatel grapes. The juice independently welling from
the selected grapes provides the basis for the aszú essence. This juice is highly
valuable, since one basket (28-30 litres) of grapes provide only one – one and a
half litres of essence. Wines are later qualified by the number of grape-baskets
used in the wine making process, which falls between 3 and 6. According to
King Lajos XIV, the Tokaji aszú is “the king of wines, the wine of kings”.

Sopron Wine Region
Sopron Wine Region
Our historic wine region stretches at the
foot of the Alps, at the southern shore
of Lake Fertő on 4300 hectares. So-
pron – or by its ancient Roman name,
Scarbantia – played an important role in
trade, since it is intersected by the fa-
mous Amber Road. Valuable material
findings remained from this era, and can
be viewed in the Museum of Sopron.
