Eger Wine Region
Eger Wine Region
In the Eger region vine cultivation
started with the Eger Bishopric founded
by King Saint Stephen I. Viticulture was
boosted by the Walloon settlers moving
to the area after the Tatarian invasion,
since they introduced the French style
of grape cultivation and the usage of
the wooden barrel. A real flourish came
in the 16th century, and not even the
Turkish invasion could set it back.
Moreover, as it was a significant trade
product, production levels did not fall.
Following the 91 years long occupation Eger clearly based its local economy
on viticulture. The majority of the grape-hill names and a part of the wine-cellars
were established in the 17th and 18th century. The varieties needed for the
production of the world famous Egri Bikavér (Bull-Blood of Eger) were brought
in the area within the frame of a grape-reconstruction initiative, starting in 1880.

Bükk Wine Region
Wild grape has been an indigenous plant
on 17 600 hectares of the southern
slopes of the Bükk Mountains for
thousands of years. The first written
documents on grape cultivation are from
the 14th century; from this time on wine
production has been continuous in the
region. The cellar systemof Avaswas only
established in the 18th century, where
the noble rot covered interior provides a
perfect environment for wine-aging. The
phylloxera epidemic caused significant
damages here, too, and a significant
portion of the former plantations was
transformed in to built-in areas.

North Transdanubian Wine Region
Etyek-Buda Wine Region
Viticulture, similarly to all other wine
regions in Hungary, already flourished
here at the time of the Árpád House
kings. Its full cultivation area is 5600
hectares, out of which 3927 is of
outstanding quality. At around 1830 big
towns demanded for white wine, thus
farmers in the Buda region were forced
to plant more and more white grape
varieties. In the 19th century white wine
was produced here even for the famous
champagnes of the Törley family. The
tradition survived, and nowadays white
grape cultivation is almost exclusive
in the area. Environmental factors
provide an opportunity to produce early
harvestable champagne-base wines.

Pannonhalma Wine Region
King Saint László’s domain registering
letter in 1093 mentions 88 grape
cultivators in the area. At around 1237
173 wine producing family lived in the
villages of the Pannonhalma Hills. The
region also suffered from the Turkish
Invasion and the phylloxera epidemic,
but these events resulted in the
domestication of Olaszrizling, a grape
variety that has a significant influence
on the region’s wine production. Olasz-
rizling has a unique feature: it requires
magnesium; the absorbed element gets
into the grape, and then to the wine.
