Eger
The capital of Heves County lies between
the Mátra and the Bükk Mountains, and
it is mostly famous for the battle it fought
against the Turks in 1552. Though many
centuries have passed since, nothing
could fade the glory of István Dobó, Ger-
gely Bornemissza and that of the other
heroes defending the castle. The fortress
where the battle was fought still stands,
mainly with the original and partially with
reconstructed walls from the 1870-ies.
Exhibitions, a waxwork museum, a 3D castle movie theatre, a picture and a stone
gallery provide entertainment for the visitors. Nevertheless Eger fulfils another historic
role in Hungary’s past. Its wine region stretches on 6000 hectares, has a past of
around 1000 years, and still defines the everyday lives of its inhabitants. After having
a sip of Egri bikavér (Bull’s Blood of Eger) we may visit the Turkish Bath, where 3000
litres of 31 Celsius degrees, radioactive thermal water burst open on a daily level.
Along with the therapeutic spas a wellness centre, swimming and children’s pools
also await those looking for relaxation.

Outsoor Village Museum (Skanzen), Szentendre
At the border of Szentendre a redolent
village awaits its visitors. The open air
museum offers us a glimpse into folk
architecture, living culture, farming and
husbandry techniques and lifestyles
via settlement ethnological aspects,
categorized by geographical regions.
The buildings – and their furniture,
equipments – scattering the 46 hectares
of the surrounding nature reserve are of
invaluable worth. Some of the exhibitions
on the specific regions offer folklore
programmes, craftsman demonstrations
and theatrical performances. From April 2009 onwards visitors can take a ride on a
train from the 1920-ies on a more than two kilometres long rail.

Kalocsa
The history of our town is rooted back
to the arrival of the Hungarians to the
Carpathian Basin. It was an outstanding
cultural centre as early as in the time of
King Saint Stephen I. Being one of the
four Roman Catholic Archbishopric Seats
it is Kalocsa, where one of Hungary’s
oldest cathedral is situated. Nevertheless
the town is famous for not only its cultural and educational heritage, but its folk art is
widely acknowledged, too. Its wood-carving and pottery traditions are also unique,
and bear characteristic motives that cannot be mistaken. The folklore of Kalocsa
provides an integral part to its folk art. A new painting technique, daubing (pingálás)
was developed here, and soon became a popular process not only when colouring
walls, but pots and Easter eggs, too. The transformation of the Kalocsa folklore is
genuinely captured by the permanent exhibition in the Viski Károly Museum, but
those who are more interested in the similarly world-famous spice paprika, will find
all information they need in the Paprika Museum.

Royal Palace of Gödöllő, Gödöllő
The baroque building was erected in the
1740-ies,ontheorderAntalGrassalkovich
I, an outstandingly influential aristocrat in
the 18th century. The first construction
period lasted till 1745. Between 1746
and 1749 two wings were added to the
building; the stable and the hayloft in the
southern wing, and a still operating catholic church in the northern one. Queen
Maria Theresa had the opportunity to see the palace in its new form, when she
visited her main confidant in 1751. Antal Grassalkovich I kept on extending and
reconstructing the palace till the end of his life. But it was his son, Antal Grassalkovich
II, who established a baroque stone theatre in the double U-shaped building, which
possesses a double dress-circle and excellent stage technology. His grandson,
Antal Grassalkovich III got the last wing of the northern side built; he was the one
who ordered the erection of the new Orange House, and the transformation of the
formal French garden into a landscape garden. At our present the building functions
as a museum, and also as an acknowledged conference and event centre.
