Festetics Castle, Dég
Hungary’s single Classicist castle is lo-
cated in Fejér County. The building, de-
signed by Mihály Pollack, was raised be-
tween 1810 and 1815. It is surrounded
by an astonishingly beautiful landscape
park, which even nowadays is available
for visitors. Sándor Festetics dreamed
about renovating the palace, but in 1944
the family left their home, which unfortu-
nately gave an opportunity to the occu-
pying forces to appropriate or destroy the
original furnishing. Researchers lately have
found Classicist ornamental colouring be-
neath the single coloured paint layers of
the room walls, and they are partly available for the public too, to view.

Esterházy Palace, Pápa
Reconstructions on the castle, located
in the town of Pápa started in 1717,
with the co-operation of József Gross-
mann and Jakab Fellner, thus by 1780
the building, that once served defence
purposes slowly transformed into a ba-
roque palace, representing comfort and
luxury. This was the time, when Joseph
Ignaz Mildorfer’s unique frescos were
put on the walls. The Ancestors’ Hall
and the Nádor Hall was created only
when the next renovation took place, in
1860. Unfortunately the Soviet occupa-
tion took its toll on this palace, too; its
furnishing almost completely disappeared or was destroyed, the building’s condi-
tion continuously deteriorated, and by 1996 it was officially declared life-threaten-
ingly dangerous. Due to the structured renovation – being in process even today
– the baroque aristocratic interior designs are again available for the public, even
with exhibition guiding.

L’Huillier-Coburg Castle, Edelény
Hungary’s seventh largest castle
stands on an artificial island, and is
surrounded by the River Bódva. Its
construction was ordered by Ferenc
János L’Huillier in 1716, and the
building that reached its final form in
1760 was owned by several famous
families in the past. This is why it is
sometimes referred to as Esterházy-
Forgách Castle. Some of its rooms
are decorated by rococo frescos of
priceless value, which were restored
during the full renovation carried out
in 2014. This can also be said about
the four nicely fashioned cockle stoves and the wrought-iron elements,
which together perfectly reflect the castle’s former glory. The building’s
utilisation was also an important aspect, thus a visitor centre was created
with a 3D movie show and art-exhibition guiding.

Vaszary Villa, Balatonfüred
The villa that by today has become
Balatonfüred’s
cultural
gem
stone was built by Kolos Vaszary,
archbishop of Esztergom, and uncle
of the famous Hungarian painter, Já-
nos Vaszary. The building suffered
great damages during the Soviet
occupation, but was renovated in
2010. Close to 50 of the artist’s
creations have been brought here
since, which are available to view
in a permanent exhibition. The villa
hosts numerous literary, musical and
performance events, moreover from
time to time famous artists and public
characters guide visitors around.
