Questions Concerning Penalty Fares

How do I recognise the inspector?

An inspector is entitled to work only with an inspector’s identification containing a photo and a unique ID.

When does the inspector impose a penalty fare?

A penalty fare is imposed if the passenger does not comply with the conditions of travel, for example, if they cannot produce a valid ticket or pass at the time of the check or cannot prove entitlement to a discount.

The inspector hands over the following documents at the time of the penalty fare:

  • a second copy of the certificate completed and signed during the check, containing the passenger's details and the reason for the penalty fare;
  • 1 penalty fare payment order;
  • 1 fare payment order.

If the payment is made on the spot, the driver issues a receipt (on-board penalty fare).

How, and for how long, can I pay the penalty fare?

The penalty fare must be paid within 30 days of its imposition, using the cash transfer order provided when the penalty fare was imposed, by bank transfer or within 3 working days at a Volánbusz ticket office. If payment is made after 30 days, the penalty fare will be increased.

Tariffs applicable from 1 April 2023:

The rules on penalty fares for local bus transport in individual municipalities (e.g., payment deadline, amount of the penalty fare in case of late payment) may differ. More information on this subject can be found on our website and in our business regulations.

Within 30 days of its imposition, the penalty fare may be paid in three instalments, without any handling fee, if the charged person so requests in writing. In the case of applications submitted after the payment order, an additional handling fee of HUF 1,750 is payable, in addition to the costs incurred during the payment order, which the passenger is obliged to pay together with the agreed instalments.
