About Volánbusz Transport Company

The Volánbusz Közlekedési Zártkörűen Működő Részvénytársaság is a passenger bus company with a history of more than 90 years. The company, founded in 1927 under the name MAVART, initially had only 30 buses; today, as the third largest state-owned company in Hungary in terms of the staff number, we provide services with about 6,000 vehicles on a countrywide basis.

The core business of our company is to provide a scheduled public bus transport service; we provide our passengers with everyday travel, work and school access, as well as access to vital institutions. The joint work of our approximately 18,000 colleagues, including more than 10,600 bus drivers result in an efficient operation and a high-quality service.

At the national level, we ensure the daily, direct and regular connection of the county seats, the most important regions and excursion centres with each other and with the capital. In Pest county, suburban bus services provide travel connections to Budapest for more than 120 cities and villages, while at a nationwide level, 3,146 out of Hungary’s 3,155 municipalities are involved in our company's intercity services, and we provide local transport in almost 70 municipalities in Hungary. In addition, we’ve been operating scheduled international bus services for decades.

The quality and high standard of our services is extremely important for us. Having a constantly renewing and upgrading fleet of vehicles and the strictest certified quality management system, Volánbusz carries almost 443 million passengers on its more than 17.5 million bus services that cover about 440 million kilometres a year.

Since January 2021, MÁV Zrt became the owner of Volánbusz Zrt. Thanks to the unified strategic management of these two transport companies and a coordinated development of rail and road passenger transport services, we are offering more and more high-quality, modern and environmentally friendly services for our passengers.

We strive to create and a reliable transparent clock-face timetable provided in practice even in the most difficult road traffic conditions. We make the transportation of our passengers even more convenient by options for advance ticket sales, seat reservation, as well as online purchasing of tickets and travel passes. MÁV-START Zrt. and Volánbusz are committed to expand their common sales channels aiming to create a 21st century public transport platform that spans municipalities and services. As one of the first steps in this, we have created a number of common fare products and the range of bus tickets and travel passes that can be bought in the MÁV mobile application and in MÁV-START ticket offices is constantly expanding.

The harmonization of timetables and the creation of single sales area and a tariff community aims to make more and more people to choice of public transport instead of individual travel, thus contributing to a significant reduction in emissions and the creation of a more liveable environment. Sustainability objectives of the MÁV-Volán Group include the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions of transport service providers, green digitalisation, efficient energy management, reducing the environmental impact of waste and transition to a circular economy, as well as the development of an environmentally friendly, sustainable corporate operation.

In the framework of our company's vehicle rejuvenation program launched in 2018, we have put nearly 1,800 new and innovative buses into service. Thanks to vehicle procurement, CO2 emissions of our fleet have been reduced by 27,000 tons relative to the 338,000 tons in 2019, which is equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of 15,000 cars. In the Green Bus Program, the Hungarian government will give a support of HUF 36 billion over ten years for the quality replacement of our vehicle fleet through the purchase of electric buses in municipalities with a population of more than 25,000 inhabitants. Under this program, our company has tendered for the purchase of electric buses and the construction of a charging infrastructure required for their operation. In order to develop an environmentally friendly vehicle fleet, we have established a joint venture with MVM Mobiliti Kft, a company responsible for the introduction of green transport, which has been operating under the name Mobiliti Volánbusz Kft since February 2021. In 2021, we purchased 41 electric buses, which will be followed by an additional 60 electric and 164 gas-powered vehicles in 2022.
