Questions about Mothers and Young Children

What travel discounts can I claim with my young child?

Children under six years of age are entitled to free travel on local and long distance transport, while the accompanying person must have a ticket or a valid pass. For national bus services requiring a supplementary fare (except for passes), a long-distance supplementary ticket must be purchased for children over the age of three. No discount is available on the supplementary long-distance ticket.

Additional discounts are available on local services in many municipalities, details of which can be found here in Hungarian.

Can I board the bus with my child in a pushchair?

For Volánbusz it is very important that passengers with pushchairs can travel without any hindrance, which is why we are increasingly operating low-floor vehicles with a central door that allows passengers with pushchairs to board easily.

In the case of earlier bus types and modern coaches, due to the narrow aisles and the variability in the saturation of services, we ask our passengers to request the driver place the folded pushchair in to luggage compartment of the vehicle.

In all cases, the accompanying person is responsible for the accommodation and supervision of the infant in the pushchair, with the addition that the accompanying person should also decide whether the infant is to be carried in the pushchair or sitting on a lap. An exception to that rule is where the use of a child seat is compulsory in the country concerned in international travel. A small child may be carried in a pushchair only if there is a space on the bus or coach designated for a pushchair. An infant may be carried only with the seat belt fastened and the push chair secured.

Baby carriers, carry cots, child seats, child safety systems, etc., used for the carriage of infants may be carried on the bus or coach. A pushchair (whether open or folded) may be carried as hand luggage in the passenger compartment of the bus or coach only if it can be positioned in such a way that it does not impede the movement of passengers within the vehicle, cannot become displaced and cannot cause damage to or contamination of the passengers' physical integrity, clothing or luggage, or the bus or coach and its equipment. Each pushchair shall be placed in the bus or coach in the space reserved for wheelchairs, where possible, and secured against displacement.
