Questions Concerning the Transportation of Live Animals, Hand Luggage and Ordinary Luggage

Can I carry a live animal on the bus?

According to Section 10.1 of the Volánbusz Business Regulations, a live animal may be transported in a closed means of transport that does not exceed the size of hand luggage and ensures that the animal does not escape during the journey. The animal must not cause alarm or fear to any person.

When transporting a dog, the passenger must have the dog's vaccination record or passport, and present it to the driver or inspector on request. One dog per passenger may be carried in a closed means of transport. For a fee, one dog per coach per occasion may be carried without a closed carrier, though muzzled (in a muzzle mask) and on a lead. If more than one dog on a lead is required to be carried at the same time on the same bus or coach, the passenger already travelling on the same bus or coach shall have priority for the carriage of a dog. The order in which people apply to board the bus with a dog on a lead shall be subject to the same rules as for the order of transport.

Assistance dogs (e.g., guide dogs, assistance dogs for people with reduced mobility, voice dogs, distress dogs, personal assistance dogs) and dogs assisting the authorities, may be carried free of charge and muzzle-free on the bus.

Poultry (domestic fowl) and birds may be transported in a means of transport (crate, box, etc.) that prevents the escape of contamination from the animals.

No poisonous animals (poisonous snakes, scorpions, spiders, etc.) may be transported by bus. Infectious animals may not be carried on the bus.

Volánbusz reserves the right to restrict the carriage of live animals. The passenger transporting the animal is liable for any damage caused by the transported animal.

How much luggage can I take with me?

Passengers may take with them on the bus or coach, as hand luggage, items which can be easily carried by one person, weighing no more than 10 kg and of an average size corresponding to their weight. That is subject to the further condition that the luggage, whether carried in the passenger's hand, on the passenger's lap or otherwise, because of its size, does not impede the movement of passengers within the bus or coach, does not cause discomfort to seated or standing passengers, does not endanger the physical integrity of passengers and does not cause damage to, or contamination of, their clothing, their luggage, the bus or coach, or its equipment.

On regional and suburban services and on national services where the bus or coach is not equipped with a luggage rack or a luggage compartment, luggage shall be considered to be any object carried in the passenger compartment which is heavier and/or larger in size than hand luggage, i.e., heavier than 10 kg and/or cannot normally be carried in the hand or lap during carriage, and any other bulky object.

A passenger may take no more than 2 items of luggage, each weighing no more than 20 kg and not exceeding the size limit of 100x50x50 cm, on board a bus or coach not providing luggage carriage (without a luggage rack or a luggage cupboard).

Regardless of the size, 1 sledge or 1 packed funeral wreath with a maximum diameter of 60 cm, per person, may be taken on board the bus as luggage.

The conditions for the carriage of hand luggage apply (items excluded from carriage, packaging, stowage, security, liability, etc.).

Hand luggage that can be taken on board the bus or coach will be carried free of charge by Volánbusz.

For further information on the charges for the carriage of luggage on long distance transport, please refer to the chapter on Fare products and tariffs in the Business Regulations.

Can I carry a bicycle or (electric) scooter on the bus?

Bicycles can be transported on designated buses of Volánbusz on specific routes. Bicycles are transported outside the bus on a carrier mounted on the vehicle's tow bar, so a maximum of 3 bicycles per bus can be transported at any one time. Tandem, electric bicycles and tricycles cannot be carried.

The bicycle ticket can be purchased at Volánbusz Pest county ticket offices and online sales platform at a price of HUF 990 per journey. The bicycle ticket can only be purchased for the routes and connections covered by the bicycle transport service. Bicycles can only be transported on a bus or coach with which the owner of the bicycle is travelling, and only up to the stop for which the passenger's ticket or travel card is valid. Folding bicycles can be transported in the luggage space or luggage compartment of the bus, as can scooters and electric scooters.
